Following tradition, it was the speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, who invited him this Friday in a letter.

As expected, the Democratic leader accepted the invitation, his spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.

For the first time since he was elected, the president will address a divided Congress: Republicans won a slim majority in the House of Representatives in November’s midterm elections. But the Democrats retained control of the Senate.

“The American people sent us to Washington to redirect the country, find common ground, and discuss their priorities,” Kevin McCarthy states in the letter.
