Nine men were caned in public in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday as punishment for various crimes under the country’s new government, a Taliban-appointed official said.
The whipping were the latest example of the harsh policies imposed by the Taliban since they came to power in August 2021, rules that reflect their interpretation of Islamic or sharia law.

Haji Zaid, spokesman for the governor’s office in the southern province of Kandaharexplained in a tweet that the lashings occurred in a sports stadium in the homonymous capital of the region.
Each man received between 35 and 39 blows in front of Taliban officials, religious clerics, elders and local people.he added. The tweet did not offer details about the crimes of which they were accused or offer more details.

Last month, the Taliban executed an Afghan convicted of killing another man in the first public execution since the former insurgents returned to power.r. No country has officially recognized the new Taliban Afghan government. The group had already ruled the country in the late 1990s.
