Iran: arrest of three journalists

According to local sources, at least three journalists were arrested in Iran amid protests sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini in September.

“In the past 48 hours, at least three journalists – Ms. Melika Hashemi, Ms. Saideh Shafii and Ms. Mernoush Zarey – have been arrested,” Tehran’s Association of Journalists said in a statement.

No details about the reasons for the arrest of these journalists working for the newspapers and the agency have been released.

79 journalists arrested

The reformist daily Etemad reported that they were transferred to the Evin prison in Tehran.

The newspaper estimates that 79 journalists have been arrested since demonstrations began in the country four months ago.

In late October, more than 300 Iranian journalists and photojournalists criticized the authorities in an open letter for “arresting (their) colleagues and depriving them of their rights”, in particular “access to their lawyers”.

Authorities say hundreds of people, including members of security forces, have been killed in protests following the September 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was arrested by police for alleged violation of the dress code for women.
