The practice of arbitrarily detaining people for political purposes will further damage Russia’s position in the world, which has been in free fall since the invasion of Ukraine from last year”, Blinken opined in a press conference.

The Foreign Minister denounced that the Russian authorities did not give Gershkovich access to US consular support after his capture, which means “a new violation of the international commitments assumed” by Moscow.

Blinken opined that this situation launches “a strong message” to citizens around the world that they can be arbitrarily detained for “set foot” in Russia.

The secretary declined to give details about the strategy of Washington to free the journalist and limited himself to saying that they will work “every day” to rescue him.

This same Tuesday, the president of USAJoe Biden, called Gershkovich’s relatives.
