Lula da Silva lands in China to “strengthen relations”

The Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvalanded today in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghaiwhere tomorrow he will begin a two-day official visit with which he intends to “relaunch relations” with the Asian country, his main trading partner since 2009.

This will be the third official visit of the president of the South American country to China after those he carried out in 2004 and 2009, during his first stage in office (2003-2010).

The trip was described by the Presidency as “one of the most important of the beginning” of this new stage in power, which began on January 1.

Lulawhich reaches China accompanied by a large entourage made up of ministers, businessmen, governors and congressmen, he had initially planned to carry out this visit at the end of March, but it was postponed after falling ill.

The 77-year-old Brazilian president will participate tomorrow in the inauguration of his successor in office between 2011 and 2016 and political ally, Dilma Rousseffas the new head of the development bank for BRICSthe forum that the country integrates together with Russia, India, China and South Africa.

After that, the Brazilian president will hold a meeting with businessmen and will later fly to beijingwhere he plans to meet on Friday with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping; with the prime minister li qiangand the president of the National People’s Assembly (ANP, Legislative), Zhao Leji.

During the visit, some twenty agreements will be signed to strengthen ties in the commercial area, phytosanitary protocols, technology, development, energy transition and other areas of collaboration within the framework of the bilateral strategic association.

One of them, previously announced, made headlines for establishing the direct operation of commercial transactions between Brazil and China in yuan, “without the need for dollarization.”

Lulawhich will invite Xi to visit Brazilassured this week that he is looking for “investments to create jobs and new productive assets”, with examples such as highways or hydroelectric plants.

In an editorial published today, the official newspaper Global Times qualified to Lula of “old friend of the Chinese people” and assured that his visit will help “The world witness the power of peace and development.”
