South Korea says military aid to Ukraine depends on Russia’s actions

The possibility that South Korea send military aid to Ukraine depends on Russian actions and a large-scale attack on civilians could tip the balance, the South Korean presidency said Thursday.

politics of south korea is not to sell arms to countries involved in active conflicts, for which it did not deliver weapons directly to kyiv.

However, South Korea has supported international sanctions against Moscow. and sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

The president’s office Yoon Suk Yeol He said Thursday that “South Korea cannot remain inert if there are killings that the international community takes seriously.”

What happens depends on Russia”, a presidential official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

He added that South Korea’s policy of not supplying weapons to countries in conflict it is not technically a law, but a “voluntary” decision.

Unless civilian deaths occur on a massive scale, our current position will be maintained.” the official maintained.

Yoon told reporters this week that “If there is a situation that the international community cannot condone, such as a large-scale attack on civilians (…) it will be difficult for us to insist on just humanitarian or financial support.”

This prompted Moscow to warn Seoul on Wednesday of its “unfriendly stance”, noting that supplying weapons will mean “a certain stage of involvement” in the Ukrainian conflict.

South Korea is a key US ally and a major manufacturer of artillery munitions.

A recently leaked US intelligence document portrays divisions among South Korean security authorities between its policies on sending lethal aid to conflict zones and mounting Western pressure to arm Ukraine.

According to the document, a South Korean official suggested exporting ammunition to Poland to evade politics.

Yoon plans to travel next week to USA for a state visit.
