Ukraine denounces “absurd version” on Crimea after comments by Chinese diplomat

The Ukrainian government denounced this Sunday a “absurd versionfrom the history of crimeaannexed in 2014 by Russiaafter the controversial statements of the ambassador Chinese in France, which questioned the belonging of the peninsula to Ukraine.

The controversy was unleashed after an interview by Lu Shayeambassador of China in Franceon Friday for the French news channel LCI.

When asked if crimea was Ukrainian, Lu replied: “It depends on how you look at the problem. There is a story. Crimea was Russian at first”.

He argued that countries that emerged as independent nations after the fall of Soviet Union in 1991, “they have no effective status under international law because there is no international agreement confirming their status as sovereign nations”.

Given this, Mykhailo Podoliakadviser to the presidency of Ukrainereacted on Twitter: “It is strange to hear an absurd version, of the history of Crimea, from a representative of a scrupulous country about its millennial history.”.

“All the countries of the old USSR have a clear sovereign status enshrined in international law”, he added and asked Lu Shaye to “do not repeat russian propaganda”.

A statement issued Saturday night by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France he said he had “learned with dismay of the ambassador’s statements”.

“It is left to China to say whether these statements reflect its position, which we hope is not the case.”, added the statement and recalled that the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 is “illegal under international law”.

Although Beijing says he is officially neutral, the Chinese president, Xi Jinpingnever condemned the Russian invasion and has not spoken on the phone with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

Xi recently went to Moscow to reaffirm his partnership with Russian President Vladimir Putinunder the guise of an anti-Western front.
