More than a hundred people died in floods in the north and west of Rwandalocal authorities reported on Wednesday.

Today”, 127 people have died in the western, northern and southern provinces after heavy rains occurred early Wednesday morning, the presidency announced.

Previously, the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA) that supervises the public audiovisual media, had released a first balance of 109 deaths.

In the most affected districts, those of Rubavu, Ngororero, Nyabihu (west), Gakenke, burera, Musanze (north) and nyamagabe (south), rescue operations are underway to allow “the evacuation and temporary relocation of residents of affected and high-risk areas”, added the presidency, and warned that “the rains continue”.

Images posted on the RBA’s Twitter account show crumbling houses, roads cut off by landslides, flooded fields and mudslides.

In May 2020, at least 65 people were killed in Rwanda by heavy rainfall that also left at least 194 dead in Kenya.

In late 2019, two months of relentless rain triggered floods and landslides that killed at least 265 people and forced hundreds of thousands of locals to flee their homes, mostly in Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and South Sudan.
