Trudeau accuses his intelligence services of hiding threats from China

The first Minister Canadian, Justin Trudeauaccused this Wednesday the country’s intelligence services of concealing threats against the family of a Canadian deputy by China.

Trudeau told the media in Ottawa who has ordered the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) that in the future reveals threats against the country’s lawmakers.

The newspaper “The Globe and Mail” has published that CSIS knew since 2021 that the Chinese authorities were interested in obtaining information about the family of the Canadian deputy michael chong to impose on thempotential penalties”.

The relatives allegedly reside in Hong Kongbut this information has not been provided for security reasons.

The newspaper added that the possible reprisals against Chong were the result of his critical position towards the policies of Beijing and that a Chinese diplomat in Ottawa, identified as Zhao Weiwas involved in the attempt to locate the relatives of the deputy.

Trudeau said Wednesday that he learned of the threats against Chong’s family on Monday, when the Canadian newspaper published the news.

The Canadian prime minister explained that CSIS determined that the threats were not serious enough to be passed on to the government.

As of now, we have made it clear to CSIS and all intelligence officials that when there are questions about any deputy, particularly their family, they need to be brought up.“, he claimed.

Leaked CSIS reports in recent months to the media accuse China of interference in the last two Canadian general elections, held in 2019 and 2021, to facilitate the election of candidates supposedly favorable to the Beijing authorities.
