“If we repeat what happened in the previous constitutional convention, we are going to have a new failure and Chile does not need, deserve or resist a new failure in constitutional matters”, indicated the former conservative president after casting his vote in eastern Santiago.

Piñera, who governed the country in two non-consecutive terms 2010-2014 and 2018-2022, asked to “avoid so many errors, excesses and abuses that were committed in the previous convention”whose proposed constitutional text was rejected last September in a plebiscite by 62% of Chileans.

“We have been fighting each other over the Constitution for 40 years and the Constitution must be just the opposite, it must be the great framework of unity”, he added.

The idea of ​​drafting a new Fundamental Law to replace the current onein force since the dictatorship (1973-1990) and reformed in democracy, dozens of times, was the formula that the political parties found to channel the social discontent that broke out in October 2019, during Piñera’s second term.

“We need a Constitution that unites us and not divides us; a Constitution that, along with collecting the best of our history, traditions, values ​​and principles, also incorporates the new desires and desires of Chileans”Piñera concluded.

Unlike the effervescence of the previous process, these elections are marked by a lack of citizen interest and because of the security crisis that the country is going through.

Although it is difficult to make forecasts due to the great apathy and because voting is mandatory -unlike in the 2021 constituents-, there is consensus that the correlation of forces will be very different from the previous convention, dominated by the left.

The right and the extreme right are the big favorites and the key is whether they will get enough seats (30 or more) to approve the constitutional norms without the need to negotiate.
