Biden and AMLO agree to coordinate on migration before the end of Title 42

The president of USA, Joe Bidenand its counterpart Mexican, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorheld a phone call on Tuesday in which they agreed to continue coordinating in migratory matter before the end of the controversial Title 42the expulsion policy in force until now.

In a statement, the White House explained that both leaders spoke about the “narrow” and “keep going” collaboration between the US and Mexican border authorities, as well as the “strong measures” that they will implement to avoid irregular crossings.

On Thursday, May 11, the Title 42a measure adopted by the former Republican president donald trump (2017-2021) on the grounds that it was necessary to isolate the US for health reasons in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic and that Biden continued to apply later.

According to the White House, Biden and López Obrador spoke of the importance of improving cooperation between USA and Mexico with the purpose of “manage” the migrationwithout precedents” of the region and which is expected to cross the border between the two countries with the purpose of Title 42.

In this regard, the two leaders spoke of the “urgency” to reduce the number of migrants who currently congregate in cities in northern Mexico waiting to cross into the United States and who, in some cases, have to sleep on the street or live in makeshift camps.

On Twitter, López Obrador also offered details about his conversation with Biden, which lasted about an hour, and in which both reaffirmed their commitment to continue working together on issues such as “migration with a humanist dimension”.

In a similar vein, the White House revealed that both leaders stressed the value of “manage migration in a humane and orderly manner” with the existence of legal pathways that allow them to migrate to the United States.

Likewise, the White House explained that López Obrador and Biden reaffirmed their commitment to address the “root causes” that cause migration from Central Americasuch as violence and lack of economic opportunity, and discussed the possibility of “expand” the efforts in that sense of the two nations.

Since it went into effect in March 2020, Title 42 has been used 2.8 million times to automatically deport migrants to Mexico. migrants crossing into the US, according to data from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

With the end of Title 42, the US immigration authorities will once again apply the so-called Title 8which automatically expels those who do not qualify to apply for asylum.

The Biden government also seeks to discourage those who have headed north and wants to impose a five-year ban on those who cross the border irregularly.

In addition to migration, Biden and López Obrador spoke about some “positive developments” in the bilateral relationship, such as cooperation to end arms trafficking and trafficking in fentanyl, a substance responsible for a growing number of overdose deaths in the United States.

Likewise, Biden pledged to use “all the tools at your fingertips” to end arms trafficking to Mexico, one of López Obrador’s main requests.

The Mexican president also said that they talked about drug and arms trafficking and, “above all”, about cooperation for the well-being of the poorest peoples of the continent.
