On May 9, the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, issued a statement warning that the Islamic Republic of Iran had executed at least 209 people so far this year.

This represents an average of 10 death penalty applications per week in Iran.

In this regard, the representative of the United Nations demanded that Tehran put an end to the “terrifying” number of sentences that currently make it “one of the largest executors in the world”, and aligns with the “growing consensus in favor of the universal abolition of the death penalty”.

But the Islamic republic is not the only case in the Middle East that concerns human rights defenders these days.

This Monday the 15th, a Saudi citizen was executed in the capital of the kingdom, Riyadh, accused of having “founded a terrorist cell”.

With such execution, Saudi Arabia adds a total of 22 death sentences applied since the beginning of 2023.

The Arab kingdom maintains this type of punishment for those who commit crimes such as murder, drug trafficking, sodomy or terrorism, although this last charge is especially controversial since it has been shown that not much evidence is needed to support the accusations to carry out the death sentences. .
