Zelensky says Crimea will “certainly” become part of Ukraine again

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyreaffirmed this Thursday the commitment of his administration to recover the peninsula of crimeaoccupied by Russia since 2014, in an act to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the deportation, by the USSR, of the Crimean Tatars.

We continue to work for the liberation of Crimea, which will surely return to the Ukrainian state.” said Zelensky, who insisted that the return of the peninsula within the Ukrainian borders is a necessary requirement to restore peace and respect for international law.

In an act in which numerous leaders of the Tatar people participated, Zelensky promised to do everything possible so that the Tatars can live in their land in freedom and are not forced to settle far from Crimea.

The Ukrainian president recalled that the USSR for decades prohibited deported Tatars -especially to Uzbekistan- from returning to Crimea and stressed that Kiev is working so that all the Tatars who went into exile when Russia annexed the peninsula can return home.

Human rights organizations have denounced the persecution that the Tatar people have suffered in Crimea since Russian annexation in 2014. According to data from the Kiev authorities, 116 of the 180 political prisoners in Crimea are of Tatar origin.
