El Salvador: nine dead in stampede at Cuscatlán stadium

Nine fans died this Saturday in a stampede by fans who went to the Cuscatlán stadium in San Salvador, in The Saviorto see a match of the local soccer tournament between the Alianza and FAS teams, reported the National Civil Police (PNC).

“The number of deaths after the stampede in the cuscatlan stadium amounts to 9″ the security body posted on Twitter.

“Several injured fans are being taken to nearby hospitals, at least 2 of them in critical condition,” the police added.

According to the security body, “the first information points to a stampede of fans who tried to enter to watch the game between Alianza and FAS.”

The Minister of the Interior, Juan Carlos Bidegaín, said that “first response” institutions of the national Civil Protection system are attending to people affected by the incidents that occurred in the cuscatlan.

The match was suspended while the relief forces evacuated people from the stage.

For his part, the Minister of Health, Francisco Alabí, assured that in the hospital network “they are providing medical care to all patients.”

Hundreds of police officers and military personnel showed up at the stadium.

The atmosphere was one of bewilderment around the stadium where the intense wailing of ambulance sirens predominated.
