“Due to the detonation of a war explosivetwo children died and another was injured, the explosion occurred at that moment while several children were playing with him “informed EFE the director of Information and Culture of the province of nuristan, Haq Byan Nurestani.

Afghanistan suffered for years the effects caused by the remains of explosives and antipersonnel mines, which remained in the country after decades of armed conflict. Abandoned houses and remote areas represent a greater danger for the civilian population, since they could not be cleared by bomb squads.

Children are especially vulnerable to explosives left behind in conflict zones, by handling or playing with them without being aware of their danger.

For several decades, demining companies and organizations have worked in Afghanistan to try to remove the explosive remnants of war, among which stands out The Halo Trustwhich in collaboration with the country’s demining program claims to have cleared mines about 80% of Afghan territory.

However, the country continues to report cases, such as the one last July, in which at least two children died and eight others were injured when an artifact they were playing with accidentally exploded in a village in the province of Zabulin the south of the country.

Another similar incident occurred in January 2022 when an explosive was accidentally detonated near a school in eastern Afghanistancausing the death of at least nine children and injuring four others.
