STRAIGHT. War in Ukraine: evacuation continues after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam

Vital

  • This is the 469th day of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
  • The dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, located in the occupied Kherson region in southern Ukraine, was partially destroyed on Tuesday. Moscow and Kyiv blame each other.
  • This disaster led to the flooding of about twenty settlements and the evacuation of hundreds of people, which caused an international outcry.
  • “The explosion of the dam did not affect Ukraine’s ability to liberate its own territories,” Zelensky said on Telegram.
  • As The Washington Post reported on Tuesday, a European intelligence agency warned the CIA in June 2022 that Ukrainian special forces were planning to blow up the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

EU promises ‘essential assistance’ to Ukraine after dam explosion

“The EU is ready to provide the necessary assistance and humanitarian assistance to mitigate the consequences of this catastrophe caused by Russia,” Ukrainian diplomat Dmitry Kuleba said on Twitter after a telephone conversation with his European counterpart, Josep Borrell. A few hours earlier, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced that the EU had activated its civil protection mechanism following the collapse of the dam. Dirty water pumps, fire hoses, mobile water treatment plants and boats will be delivered “quickly,” she assured.

Evacuation continues

“The most difficult situation is in the Ship District of the city of Kherson. While the water level has risen by 3.5 meters, more than 1,000 houses have been flooded,” Oleksiy Kuleba, head of the Presidential Cabinet of Ukraine, said in a press release in this city, recaptured by the Ukrainians from the Russians in November 2022.

The evacuation will continue this Wednesday and in the coming days by buses and trains.

“More than 40 thousand people are at risk of being in the flood zone. Ukrainian authorities are evacuating more than 17,000 people. Unfortunately, there are more than 25,000 civilians in Russian-controlled territory,” Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin said on Tuesday.

“At this stage, 24 settlements have been flooded in Ukraine,” said Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klymenko.
