Sturgeon released without charge after questioning by police

The former chief minister Scottish Nicola Sturgeon was released this Sunday without charge after being arrested hours earlier and questioned in connection with an investigation into the finances of the Scottish National Party (SNPs).

Security forces are trying to clarify the fate of 600,000 pounds (700,000 euros) that the SNP raised to finance a new independence referendum, a case for which Sturgeon’s husband, Sturgeon, was also arrested and released in April. Peter Murrell.

To be in the situation I found myself in today when I am certain that I have not committed any crime is shocking and deeply distressing.”Sturgeon said in a statement after his release.

I know beyond all doubt that I am innocent of any wrongdoing.”, added the former main minister, who assured that never “would do anything that could harm the SNPs nor to the country”.

Sturgeon was the main minister of the Scottish Government and leader of the nationalist formation from 2014 until February 2023, when she surprisingly announced her resignation from both posts, giving space to a replacement in the formation, whose witness took Humza Yousaf at the end of March.

Weeks after her resignation, her husband, executive director of the nationalist party for nearly twenty years, Peter Murrell, and the former treasurer Colin Beattiewho resigned after being released.

The president of the Conservative Party in Scotland, Craig Todayhas urged that Sturgeon be suspended as a parliamentarian following her arrest, a call that has also been joined, from the SNP itself, by the nationalist deputy in Westminster Angus McNeil.

Sturgeon stressed that although it will be taken “one or two days off” following his arrest, he intends to continue to represent his constituency in the Scottish Parliament based on his “better capabilities”.

The former leader has been released without charge after more than seven hours of interrogation, although the case, open since 2021, remains “pending further investigation”, detailed the Police, who will now send a report to the Prosecutor’s Office.
