Venezuela: three out of five rectors of the National Electoral Council resign from their posts

Three of the five principal rectors of the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuelaamong them the president, Pedro Calzadilla, resigned from their posts on Thursday and asked the National Assembly (AN, Parliament), with an overwhelming pro-government majority, to designate new authorities.

Calzadilla, a former Chavismo minister, read a statement in which he gave the names of the signatories of the resignation, which does not include the rectors Enrique Marquez and Roberto Piconcloser to the opposition.

The decision to resign, he explained, was taken “for the sake of contributing to this noble objective” that Venezuela “finish heading towards economic prosperity and social stability”, something that, he considered, “depends a lot on commitment and national vocation”.

Now begins an electoral cycle of special importance, whose first election is the presidential one, and the political dialogue has continued to focus once again on the conditions that should govern this electoral process”, he continued, alluding to the negotiations between the government and the opposition.

Calzadilla, the rectors Alexis Runner and Leonel Parica, as well as five other CNE authorities, presented their unprecedented resignation and hope that this will lead to the appointment of a new directive by Parliament, which plans to “accept” the resignations, according to today’s Legislative agenda.

Calzadilla announced that, until new rectors are appointed, the institution will continue to work “without setbacks” in its activities, which includes preparing the 2024 presidential elections and the assistance that they will offer to the opposition in the internal ones on October 22.

The current CNE authorities were appointed in May 2021, after months of negotiations between the government and the opposition, and led two electoral processes that were observed by the European Union, which criticized the process.
