Newborn left at fire station is adopted by the paramedic who found her

A firefighter in Ocala, in Florida, USA, was on a night watch at the station in January when an alarm woke him up at 2 am. He recognized the sound immediately. A newborn had been placed in the Safe Haven Baby Box of the building, a device that allows someone to release a child safely and anonymously, no questions asked.

“To be honest, I thought it was a false alarm.”said the firefighter, who wished to remain anonymous to protect his family’s privacy, according to NBC News. But when he opened the box, he discovered a healthy baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket. That baby would become his daughter, Zoey..

“She had a small bottle with her and she was relaxing”he said, according to the aforementioned American media. “I picked her up and held her. We looked into each other’s eyes and that was it. I have loved her ever since.”

The fireman and his wife had been trying for over a decade to have a babyand the wheels in his head began to turn.

“I didn’t call my wife right away, because I didn’t want to wake her up, but I knew she would be on board.”he said about his plan. She would go to the hospital with the baby and ask about adopting her.

At the hospital, the firefighter, who is also a paramedic, wrote a note and left it to Zoey.

“I explained that my wife and I had been trying for 10 years to have a baby. I told them that we had completed all of our classes in the state of Florida and that we were registered to adopt.”said. “All we needed was a boy”.

When the fireman finally spoke to his wife, she began to cry.

“I was like, ‘Don’t get too excited yet’said. “My biggest fear was that the note I wrote wouldn’t stay with Zoey and she would leave. It was a very stressful few days.”

Zoey, the firefighter’s daughter

Zoey was placed in Safe Haven Baby Box from the Ocala Fire Station on January 2. On January 4, she was home with the firefighter and his wife. The couple adopted Zoey in April.

The firefighter said he later learned at the hospital that the baby’s umbilical cord had been tied with a shoelace.

“The way I found her…was God helping us”she said, adding that it’s hard not to cry when she tells the story.

He said he is sharing the story in the sense that it gives Zoey’s biological mother “some closure”. We want you to know that your daughter is being cared for. and who love her beyond words”said.

How does the ‘Safe Haven Baby Box’ work?

He Safe Haven Baby Box is a security device, approved by state law, that legally allows a mother to safely and anonymously surrender a newborn.

A Baby Box installs on an exterior wall from fire stations or designated hospitals. It has a door that goes outside the enclosure that can be opened without much problem and closes when the baby is inside.

Authorized personnel receive the baby from outside to the inside of the hospital or station. The box or mailbox maintains a controlled temperature and is designed for the comfort of a newborn.

Florida only has one Baby Box throughout the state. However, figures established by Safe Haven Baby Boxes show that 31 newborns have been delivered in a safe way.

The Florida safe haven law allows you to leave a newborn baby at a fire station or hospital anonymously and without being arrested.
