NATO is on track to renew Stoltenberg for another year as Secretary General

The general secretary of the NATO, Jens Stoltenbergwill continue for another year at the head of the Alliance, as confirmed to EFE on Thursday by allied sources, who assured that the renewal is not yet official, but it is “very advanced” and it will be announced next week if there is no unforeseen event.

The current mandate of the Norwegian politician at the head of the transatlantic organization ends on September 30 and during the last months there has been a debate about whether the countries of the NATO they would either choose a successor or opt to extend Stoltenberg’s term once more.

Finally, the member states of the Alliance have agreed that Stoltenberg will continue for another year as NATO Secretary General, a position he has held since October 2014. In those almost nine years, his mandate has been renewed several times.

The decision for Stoltenberg to continue for another twelve months at the head of the transatlantic organization is expected to be formalized in the middle of next week, when NATO plans to publish a statement announcing his continuation in office, according to the sources.

Although Stoltenberg’s term will be extended by one year, until September 30, 2024, the sources indicated that he aspires to reach the NATO leaders’ summit in Washingtonin July of next year, with a successor already agreed.

If a replacement for Stoltenberg is agreed upon for that summit, it would come with a closed candidate”, the sources pointed out.

Despite the renewal, Stoltenberg had assured in recent weeks that he was not seeking a new extension to his term.

However, on June 15 he also admitted that it is “responsible for all the decisions this Alliance has to make except one, and that is the one about my future”.
