Police who killed a teenager in France asked the family for “pardon”

The police officer who killed a teenager on Tuesday during a traffic stop in a suburb of Parissparking riots in Franceasked “sorry” to the family of the victim, informed his lawyer this Thursday.

“The first words he uttered were to apologize and the last words he uttered were to apologize to the family” of the victim, he declared. Laurent-Franck Liénard on BFMTV.

“My client is extremely shocked by the violence of this video (…), which he saw for the first time while in police custody,” the lawyer described, referring to the recording that shows the officer shooting the 17-year-old.

“He is devastated, he does not get up in the morning to kill people. He did not want to kill, ”he added.

The justice decreed this Thursday preventive detention for voluntary manslaughter for the 38-year-old policeman.

The lawyer announced that he will appeal his client’s entry into preventive detention on Friday.

Nahel’s death in the Paris suburb of Nanterre sparked riots in several French cities and reopened the debate on police violence.

Authorities on Thursday ordered the deployment of 40,000 officers in anticipation of a third night of unrest.
