Macron stresses his support for the police and firefighters in a night visit to a barracks

President French, Emmanuel Macronstressed tonight the Government’s support for police and firefighters, during a visit to a Parisian barracks in the midst of the wave of riots that the country is experiencing.

In his first exit from the Elysée in connection with the outbreak of the wave of violence over the death of a 17-year-old boy of Algerian origin shot by an agent at a police checkpoint, Macron was accompanied by the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin.

Both went by surprise to a barracks in the 17th district of the capital that houses several riot control companies and other police units.

The president listened to the stories of some agents from different forces, thanked them for the effort of the last week and highlighted their support, sources from the Élysée were quoted as saying by local media.

Meanwhile, 45,000 police officers were deployed across the country on Monday night, 7,000 of them in Parisin an attempt by the Executive to continue the process of progressive reduction of the riots -157 arrested on Sunday night compared to more than 400 on Saturday-.

At 10:00 p.m. local time (20:00 GMT), 11 people had already been arrested in Paris and the towns surrounding the capital, the news channel BFMTV reported.
