Venezuela: Parliament investigates Trump’s “criminal responsibility” for sanctions against the country

A commission of deputies of the National Assembly (AN-Parliament) of Venezuela began this Thursday to investigate the possible “criminal liabilityof the former president of USA donald trump for the “Crimes against humanity” that occurred due to the sanctions that he imposed against the Caribbean country while he was president (2017-2021).

The commission, chaired by the official Pedro Infanteheld its installation session today and expects to present a first report next week before the plenary session of the Legislature, with an overwhelming Chavista majority.

It is about determining thescope and consequences of the confessions of donald trump about his intention to collapse the country and practically steal the oil”, Infante told reporters, citing a speech by the Republican in which he spoke about the issue and called the president a dictator Nicolas Maduro.

The legislator announced that the commission will build a work agenda that will include meetings and coordinated actions with other institutions such as the Ombudsman and the judicial bodies.

He also pointed out that these investigations will be guided by the Venezuelan penal code, a statute that, he considered, has been violated by “various treasonous opposition actors” who promoted for years the imposition of sanctions against the so-called Bolivarian revolution.

In this sense, he mentioned the legal section that contemplates punishments of up to 30 years in prison, the maximum sentence in the country, for those who, “in agreement with a foreign nation or with foreign enemies, conspire against the integrity of the territory or against its institutions”.

The results of these investigations, Infante said, should be brought before organizations such as United Nations wave International Criminal Court (ICC).
