USA: Trump says he was informed that he was under legal investigation into the storming of the Capitol.

Former US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he had received a letter from prosecutors revealing that he was personally the subject of a federal investigation into the January 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol in Washington that rocked the United States. This intrusion comes when elected officials certify the victory of his rival Joe Biden in the presidential election.

“Jack Smith, Joe Biden’s DOJ Crazy Attorney, sent a letter… stating I was the TARGET of the January 6 grand jury investigation,” he wrote on his Pravda social network.

The top frontrunner in the 2024 Republican primary says he has been given “four tiny days” to answer before a grand jury, a group of citizens chosen by lot and given broad investigative powers. Donald Trump says that this procedure “almost always” leads to an indictment. In his text, the former president describes the investigation as a “witch hunt”.

Donald Trump also wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday that he has “the right to contest an election that I believe was rigged and robbed” and says he is being targeted because of the upcoming presidential election in which he is a candidate. .

A parliamentary committee, dissolved earlier this year by a new Republican majority, that day investigated the Republican’s role. In its final report, released in December 2022, the commission ruled that Donald Trump could never hold a new public office after inciting his supporters to rebel.

Sending this type of message is common in the United States and serves to alert the person that they may be the target of formal charges. This will be the second time Special Counsel Jack Smith has told Trump that he is the subject of a federal investigation.

Similar letter for “mishandling classified documents”

In June, Trump received a letter from a magistrate before a Florida grand jury indicted him for alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving the White House and for his alleged attempts to obstruct a government investigation.

In this part of the case, the Republican billionaire faces 37 charges, including “illegal possession of information relating to national security.” In mid-June, he pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and faces a historic and potentially very damaging trial in connection with his 2024 US presidential campaign.

Other ongoing cases

The Republican billionaire has also been indicted in a New York State court on multiple accounting fraud charges in connection with a payment made ahead of the 2016 presidential election aimed at silencing the X Movies actress.

The Georgia prosecutor is also due to announce by September the results of his investigation into the pressure he has been exerting to change the results of the southern state’s 2020 presidential election.
