New Zealand: At least three dead in Auckland shooting

A man opened fire on Thursday at a building in the center of the city new zealand of auckland in a “alarming incident” that left two dead, in addition to the attacker, said the local police.

The shooting coincides with the start of the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australiawhose first game is held on Thursday night in auckland between the local team and Norway.

The prime minister of the oceanic country, Chris Hipkinssaid that there was no threat to national security and that the tournament would proceed as scheduled.

“The attacker moved through the building and continued to discharge his weaponsaid the acting superintendent of police, Sunny Patel.

“As soon as he reached the top floor of the building, the man barricaded himself in the elevator shaft and our staff tried to talk to him.”, he added.

“The man fired more shots and was found dead a short time later.”, he concluded.

Police confirmed two deaths so far, in addition to the attacker. He also reported multiple injuries.

The security forces were deployed in numbers.”significant” at the scene and cordoned off the area, police said, also dispatching a helicopter.

Details of the event are still emerging, Patel said.

“What happened is understandably alarming and we are reassuring the public that this incident is under control and an isolated incident.”, the officer asserted.
