Petro asks Congress for an agrarian reform that will get Colombia out of violence and backwardness

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petrodefended this Thursday the need to carry out a broad agrarian reform to solve one of the great problems of the country, the cause of violence, which is land tenure, and get it out of arrears.

The agrarian reform has shown that the problem of Colombia it is the Earth”, Petro said in the installation speech of the new session (2023-2024) of the National Congress.

The president pointed out that if an agrarian reform is carried out “the internal market is expanded, the labor force of the land is released and therefore the fundamental conditions for industrialization would be established”.

However, he recalled that what has happened for more than a century in Colombia is that “we have killed the leaders who raise it (the distribution of land)”, and that, added to “The difficulty of processing through the laws the possibility of democratizing land tenure has led us to violence for a century”.

Petro considered as “feudal”, “premodern”, “anachronistic” and “deeply irrational to have thousands of hectares without producing a single cassava plant while the people starve and humanity starves”.

That is not possible in the times of the climate crisis” which reduces fertile land, forcing millions of Africans to migrate to Europewhere “Concentration camps await you and rifles await you, that’s why fascism grows in Europe“, said.

The president insisted that distributing land equitably is also a commitment assumed by the country in the peace agreement signed in November 2016 with the former guerrilla of the FARC.

In this sense, he pointed out that the peace agreement established the commitment to title seven million hectares of land, and his Government, which will celebrate its first year on August 7, is fulfilling that purpose.

This Government has titled one million hectares, of which 756,000 have been for indigenous people and 175,000 for peasants”, he stated.

Petro dedicated most of his speech to talking about the global climate crisis and his government’s proposals for environmental justice and social justice to reverse that situation.”
