US: Democratic MPs Call for TV Broadcast of Donald Trump Trial

That would be a shame for a former reality TV star like Donald Trump. In a letter signed on Thursday, 26 US Democratic MPs called for a televised trial of the former president over his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.

Politicians backing President Joe Biden believe that “few circumstances justify a television broadcast more than these, given their historic nature.” Another stated purpose of the request is to educate the general public and prevent criticism of perceived inequalities in the administration of justice. “In order for the public to fully accept the outcome of this trial, it is vital that they can see it as soon as possible, see how the proceedings are being conducted, the quality of the evidence, the credibility of the witnesses.”

Rebroadcast of federal lawsuits prohibited by law

Even Trump’s lawyer John Lauro said he supported the measure. “I am convinced that the Biden administration does not want the American people to have access to the truth,” he added on the very conservative Fox News channel. The trial of the former president in the case is scheduled for August 28.

The only problem is, if rebroadcasting is allowed in certain state courts, it has been banned since 1946 in federal justice, which is the subject of the 2020 election case. This ban could be lifted either by new law passed in Congress or by a decision of the Supreme Court.

However, there is no guarantee that a replay of Donald Trump’s trial, surrounded by court cases, will change the minds of his most ardent supporters. According to a recent New York Times poll, 74% of Republican voters believe Joe Biden’s predecessor did nothing wrong.
