A magnitude 6 earthquake struck the southern coast of Ecuador and northern Peru

An earthquake of magnitude 6 shook the southern coast of Ecuador and northern Peru, with no physical or material damage reported so far, according to the first official reports.

The Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School The telluric movement was recorded at 00:24 local time (5:24 GMT) and its epicenter was located less than 15 kilometers west of the city Machalacapital of the southern coastal province of Goldborder with Peru.

The earthquake, which originated at about 30 kilometers underground, was felt with strong intensity in other nearby Ecuadorian cities such as the port Guayaquilwhere it also caused alarm and some people evacuated the buildings to go to the street.

while, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) recorded the tremor with a magnitude of 5.6 and with a depth of 58 kilometers that made it felt with a strong intensity in the Peruvian town of Zarumillalocated on the border with Ecuador.

The Institute Oceanographic and Antarctic of the Ecuadorian Navy (Inocar) specified that the earthquake does not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami on the Ecuadorian continental coast.

So much Ecuador as Peru are in the so-called zone of the Pacific ring of firea ring that runs along the west coast of America and the east coast of Asia and Oceaniawhere 80% of the world’s seismic activity occurs.
