Dominican Republic: Business Owners Arrested for Explosion That Left 33 Dead

The Dominican authorities The owners of a plastics company were arrested this Wednesday where the explosion that allegedly originated two weeks ago left 33 dead, reported the defense attorney, who described it as “circus” the operation.

Maribel Sandoval and Edward Vidalowners of Vidal Plastwere arrested along with their daughter, whose identity was not revealed, in a raid carried out by the National Police at home in San Cristobal (24 km from Santo Domingo), where the incident was recorded.

The family is under investigation for their possible responsibility in the explosion on August 14, whose 500-meter shock wave destroyed nearby buildings and killed 33 people and injured more than 50.

“I think that the assembly was unnecessary, the apparatus of the arrest and the raid because they simply want to sell the circus country”, criticized the lawyer Norberto Rondon before the press.

A preliminary report from the fire department dated August 18, leaked this week, revealed that the epicenter of the detonation was at Vidal Plast.

“This place contained accumulations of gases and flammable materials, which with sparks, ignition, heat or friction could generate the activation of said explosion.”, according to the report, which Rondón dismissed and described as a “jumble of lies, half truths and manipulation”.

“This company does not operate with any kind of chemical agent so that they are talking nonsense”, he indicated. “Plastic was cut with two mills, one larger, one smaller, powered by electricity, which cut the plastics with a blade and put them into small pieces.” to sell to manufacturers of bags or bottle caps.

Another more detailed study of the incident should come out in the coming days.

The firefighters highlighted that in Vidal Plast a report on vapor generation was registered in March, in which they found organic peroxide, a product that requires storage at temperatures below 20ºC and is highly reactive to changes in temperature, sparks and humidity. It was ordered at the time to remove it.

The commercial area of San Cristobal where the explosion occurred was being vacated to build a municipal parking lot.

Four buildings were destroyed and nine others were affected in the explosion.
