Lula’s party already wants him as a candidate for re-election in 2026, at 81 years old

He workers party (PT) spoke out in favor of a new candidacy for the current president Brazilian, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvafor the elections to be held in 2026according to a document released this Wednesday.

The text was the result of a meeting of the national leadership of the PT facing the municipal elections next year, which he considers as a prelude to the 2026 presidentialwhen Lula will be 81 years old.

The party founded in 1980 by Lula himself and a hundred labor leaders and intellectuals, says that “it is necessary to organize the political-electoral battle” of 2024 and “build powerful alliances” at the municipal level, for later “re-elect Lula in 2026” and “strengthen a project for a democratic and popular country”.

In the campaign for last year’s elections, in which the far-right Jair Bolsonarothen in power, Lula said more than once that if he won those elections he would not be a candidate for any public office again.

However, last July, he seemed to revise that idea, especially after the US president, Joe Biden80 years old, announced his decision to participate in the primaries of the Democratic Party facing a possible re-election in 2024.

Lula reported that he learned of Biden’s aspirations last May, during a meeting that both kept on the sidelines of the G7 summit held in the Japanese city of hiroshima.

I asked him if it was true that he was going to attend” to the 2024 elections and “he told me ‘yes, I’m going to do it’”, declared Lula then, who considered Biden’s decision as a “stimulus“, because he is”younger” than the American leader.

The PT, in the document released this Wednesday, did not make any allusion to Lula’s age or even consider another presidential candidacy for 2026.

According to the text, the municipal elections of October next year should be the springboard for “promote social mobilization and political construction”, all with a view to “re-elect Lula in 2026″.

Bolsonaro, who is still Lula’s greatest political antagonist, will not be able to participate in the next presidential elections, since the electoral Justice has stripped him of his political rights for eight years, due to abuses of political and economic power in which he incurred during the campaign. of 2022.
