Bolivia: Medical report indicates that the life of the detained opposition governor is “at risk”

A private medical report established that the life of the opposition leader and governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camachostopped by the 2019 crisis in bolivianis at risk”, his lawyer Martín Camacho reported this Thursday.

The jurist pointed out that four specialists, who participated in a medical board together with several doctors from the penitentiary regime, indicated in a report that the life of the governor “is at risk” being in a place without conditions of “healthiness”, which has aggravated the underlying diseases that “affect your immune system”.

Camacho suffers from Churg-Strauss syndromea disease that causes inflammation of the blood vessels and can cause permanent damage to the organs, for which he needs special medication and constant medical evaluations, and also suffers from high blood pressure.

The medical report also states that the governor must be “at sea level“and not in the prison of chonchoroat more than 4,000 meters of altitude, and its “internment“in a health center”for medical examinations”.

The lawyer said that a legal assessment of the private medical report will be made to propose the cessation of preventive detention, which is applied in cases of serious health, terminal illness or when the life of a prisoner is at risk.

Concern for Camacho’s condition arose after he was seen much thinner in a virtual hearing at the end of July and, according to his defense, with a “obvious deterioration in health”.

The lawyers said at the time that Camacho weighed 54 kilos and that during the seven months in preventive detention, since his arrest in December 2022, he lost around 20 kilos, for which his relatives requested a medical assessment “in a specialized center”.

This Thursday, the General Directorate of Penitentiary Regime indicated in a statement that on August 16, under a court order, a medical meeting was held that concluded that Governor Camacho “is stable”.

In that assessment, some 26 physicians from 12 specialties suggested “settings” to Camacho’s medication to treat his hypertension, some complementary tests and they asked their personal doctors for the protocols with which they assist him.

The institution questioned the report of the four Camacho doctors, since in the medical board they stated “otherwise”.

The governor has been in preventive detention since the end of last year accused of terrorism and other crimes in the so-called case “coup d’état I”, related to the 2019 crisis.

The Government maintains that the protests after the frustrated 2019 elections were a “coup d’état” against the then president Evo Moraleswhile the opposition considers that they were due to the citizen reaction after an electoral fraud.
