The approved resolution specified that all the halls that are part of the headquarters of the OAS in Washington they have already been named in honor of historical figures of the hemisphere.

The text recalled the coup which took place in Chili on September 11, 1973 and also highlighted that similar processes took place in other countries of the continent, “with breakdowns in democratic processes that included the repression of human rights, including civil rights and politicians.”

The Permanent Council resolved to grant Allende (1908-1973) a recognition “in the same terms that have been applied to the historical figures of the hemisphere who are honored at the headquarters of the organization”, and therefore decided “designate with the name of President Salvador Allende Gossens” the main door of its headquarters.

The permanent representative of Chili before the OAS, Sebastian Kraljevichhighlighted in the session that the coup and the subsequent dictatorship impacted “severely throughout the hemisphere, with consequences that are still present to this day in the most varied spheres of social life, from politics and the economy to culture and the human rights”.

Eight out of ten families of the disappeared are still looking for them. It is also present in the challenges and turbulences that our imperfect democracies face, where autocratic views stress them every day.“, said.

Kraljevich appealed “to take care of memory, because without it it is impossible to build the future” requested by the populations of their countries.

The resolution of this Tuesday, in his opinion, is a testimony which recognizes and honors the principles of democracy, human rights, peace and “respect for different opinion”.

“It is not tolerable to overthrow by force a government democratically elect. It wasn’t 50 years ago and it isn’t today.”concluded Kraljevich appealing to “face the challenges of democracy always with more democracy”.
