Algeria opens its airspace to humanitarian flights to and from Morocco after devastating earthquake

The Algerian authorities announced the opening of their airspace – closed two years earlier – for humanitarian flights and transportation of the wounded to and from Morocco after the earthquake that shook the region of Marrakesh and that has caused at least a thousand deaths and more than 600 injured, reported the Presidency of Algeria.

Algeria shows its full willingness to provide humanitarian assistance and put all their material and human capabilities in solidarity with the brother Moroccan people when Morocco ask for it”the source stated in a statement.

In September 2021, Algiers ordered the immediate closure of its airspace, including civil and military flights as well as aircraft registered in the neighboring country, after breaking diplomatic relations by accusing Rabat of “hostile actions”.

Among them, according to Algierssupport qualified groups of terrorists by the Algerian authorities who were supposedly involved in the fires that devastated the north of the country and in which a hundred people lost their lives.

Algerian Civil Protection affirmed today that the magnitude 7 earthquake registered in Morocco was felt in half a dozen provinces in the west of Algeria although it did not cause victims or material damage.

For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement in solidarity with Morocco and assured that “follows with great sadness and deep anguish the consequences of the violent earthquake that struck several regions of the Kingdom of Morocco. In this painful trial, Algeria offers its most sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the brother Moroccan people, assuring them of his deepest condolences and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured”.

The land borders between both states have been closed since 1994 by Algerian decision after a terrorist attack committed in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh that Rabat indirectly attributed to Algeriaimposing a mandatory visa to the algerians.
