Biden in trouble?: the first poll in which Trump leads him by 10 points and his weaknesses to win re-election

The campaign for the White House has the president Joe Biden already donald trump, its main rival, redoubling the bets. The Democratic president became the first sitting US head of state to join a strike on Tuesday, the 26th, when he joined auto workers on a picket line in Michigan to express his support. With this, he was one day ahead of his Republican opponent, who yesterday gave a speech in front of employees of an auto parts factory in that same state.

The fact that Michigan has become a battleground between Biden and Trump this week is just the latest sign that the race is centered on these two figures, despite the party’s primary campaign still underway in the United States.

According to an average of polls compiled by RealClear Politics, Biden and Trump would be the candidates of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, respectively, in the 2024 elections. In the final race for the White House, Trump has a slight advantage of 1.2% over Biden, while the last four polls showed the two candidates tied.

However, the pressure on Biden grew this week with the publication of a poll by “The Washington Post” and ABC News, in which Trump is 10 points ahead (52% against 42%).

The “Washington Post” highlights that Trump’s considerable margin of advantage in this poll differs significantly from other recent polls that conclude parity. “The difference between this poll and others, as well as the unusual composition of the Trump and Biden coalitions in this poll, suggest that this is probably an outlier,” he says.

As president, Biden He is seen as the obvious candidate among Democrats, although objections to his candidacy have been growing in line with the lapses and incidents in which the 80-year-old president has been involved and which are often associated with his age.

Trump’s case is, by far, much clearer. Despite facing 91 felony charges across four jurisdictions, the former president is nearly 40 points ahead of his closest Republican rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

The Post-ABC poll shows Biden’s overall approval at 37% and 56% of Americans disapprove, a similar number to other recent polls. One of the most troubling things for the president is that more than 3 in 5 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say they would prefer a candidate other than the president.

The poll shows widespread concern about the president’s age as he seeks a second term. Many experts attribute the objections to the candidacy of Biden to this issue and warn that his cognitive abilities and his state of health could make it difficult for him to defeat Trump, 77 years old, and, even if he wins, they fear that the country will have a president who is incapable of carrying out his duties.

It is also clear that Americans are not satisfied with the Democrats and their government on several fronts. The survey reveals that approval for his management of the economy fell to 30%, the lowest level of his presidency. “Although the unemployment rate has remained below 4 percent for more than a year, 57 percent evaluate it negatively. Even worse is the assessment of gasoline or energy prices (87%), which have risen again recently, and food prices (91%)”, says “The Washington Post”.

Other hot potatoes for Biden are immigration and the role of U.S in the war in Ukraine.

While Biden struggles to neutralize the discontent of a skeptical public, some possible rivals within his party begin to appear timidly. California Governor Gavin Newsom is one of them. Although he has avoided confirming whether he will be a Democratic candidate, several analysts suggest it is quite likely.

In an unusual scenario, Fox News announced this Monday, the 25th, that it would host a debate at the end of November between Republican Ron DeSantis, from Florida, and Newsom, from California.

“Newsom is widely viewed as a potential candidate if, for some unforeseen and unlikely reason, Biden decides not to run, and is also viewed as a leading contender in the 2028 Democratic primary.”says “The New York Times”.

Meanwhile, last night seven Republicans debated in California for the second time without Trump, who made it clear that he has no need to respond to the other candidates in his party, as he will be the chosen candidate in the end.
