France: Macron announces electric car for 100 euros per month for low-income families

The French president, Emmanuel Macronannounced this Thursday the launch of the program to access electric vehicles for long-term rental of 100 euros per month, which will be awarded to families with modest incomes from 2024

The program, which had been promised by Macron in his 2022 re-election campaign, will start on January 1 and will benefit families with annual incomes of less than 15,400 euros.

Beneficiaries will also have to live more than 15 kilometers from their place of work and will need a car to get there due to the lack of adequate public transport, with a total of at least 8,000 kilometers per year for work reasons.

It was announced by the Government that they expect to sell around 20,000-25,000 units in this way in 2024 (a modest number, as in 2022 a total of 1.529 million units were sold in France), but from then on they hope to increase the scope of the program progressively.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Economy released a list of vehicles eligible for the so-called “electric bonus”a different support program for the acquisition of this type of cars and light commercial vehicles, which replaces the previous one “ecological bonus”.

The list includes several European models and some Korean and Japanese models, but no Chinese ones. The Government’s objective is “replace thermal vehicles with electric ones” for “continue reducing our CO2 emissions”which are still much more expensive, said Macron in a message on social media.

The Executive seeks to help citizens “buy electric vehicles specially produced at home”highlighted Macron, who in the past has repeatedly been against the allocation of public funds to subsidize the purchase of Chinese cars.
