A Vatican court has jailed a former Pope advisor for financial crimes.

Italian Cardinal Angelo Becciu was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

The 75-year-old was the highest-ranking Vatican official ever to face such charges.

He was once considered a papal candidate.

At the heart of the trial was a real estate transaction in London that led to enormous losses for the Catholic Church.

He firmly rejects the accusations, including embezzlement and abuse of office.

He was tried along with nine other people who were also accused of witness tampering.
