Today, shots were fired in Jan Palach Square at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague, killing “at least four people and wounding 20.”
Staff and students at the university in Prague, Czech Republic, were told to lock themselves in rooms and Czech police said the shooting left an “unspecified number of people” dead.
Czech police said: “The shooter has been eliminated.” The entire building is currently being evacuated, there are several deaths and dozens of injuries.”
Students were seen huddled on an eaves to hide from the gunman, who appeared to fire a gun from the roof.
The city of Prague’s emergency medical service said on Twitter: “We have confirmed numbers of deaths and a large number of injuries.” “The spectrum of injuries is broad: from very serious to moderate to mild.”
Videos on social media also showed crowds running as a gunshot rang out in the background, while others sprinted across a bridge, shouting.
Photos show students leaving the Faculty of Arts building with their hands on their heads; in one photo a body bag is visible.
Student Jakob Weizman shared a photo of his classroom door, which was barricaded with desks and chairs.
The bridge across which the frightened people ran is the Charles Bridge, one of the city’s main tourist attractions.
Photos on local television showed people running out of the main university building with their hands raised.
Filip Horky shared his experience on X: “Shots are fired at Staroměstská on the field. I’ve lived a good life, I don’t want to die, but what can I do? Good luck to everyone in the building. We can hear him shooting…’
Mr Horky confirmed to Metro.co.uk that he was now safe.
The British Embassy in Prague wrote: “If you are near the Faculty of Arts in central Prague, please follow the advice of local authorities.”
“UK nationals requiring consular assistance should contact the embassy.”
