Flu, Covid… Why the British are vaccination champions

The town hall looks like a vaccine clinic. In one corner, next to a sparkling Christmas tree, older people wait to get a “shot” (shot) in the arm. Outside, the rain is pouring down in heavy drops. “Despite this, this is a great success,” exclaims Samia Chaudhary, the local elected official in charge of health in Hounslow, in the western suburbs of London.

Like these residents, almost 75% of Britons aged at least 65 have been vaccinated against Covid this autumn, and the same number (often the same people) against the flu. It is even the fastest flu vaccination campaign ever carried out across the English Channel, as the National Health Service (NHS) rejoiced in mid-October. The UK is the European “champion” in this area, but France pales in comparison: since September, “only” a quarter of French older people have received Covid jabs and half have received flu jabs.
