“Living conditions are catastrophic”: a refugee in southern Gaza talks about his daily life

They live in territory where there is a war. Mohammed* is a native of Gaza by birth. He also lived abroad, but since 2011 he has returned and settled in Beit Hanoun, in the northern Gaza Strip, with his wife and children. His daily life changed radically when war broke out between Israel and Hamas in early October. “We fled from the first day because our area was completely destroyed,” Mohammed laments. According to him, his house had just been rebuilt after it was first destroyed by the Israelis in 2014.

After leaving Beit Hanoun, the family settled “in a school in the Jabaliya camp,” in the northern Gaza Strip. A refugee camp that the Israeli army admitted bombing in late October, saying a Hamas commander had been killed there. Mohammed then describes a “nightmare” consisting of “massive, almost random explosions.” After 45 days, he and his family were finally able to leave. They are now in Rafah, on the border with Egypt. “Every time we move, we leave all our luggage behind,” he says.
