US presidential election: Trump said he wants “total immunity” for a White House tenant

As he solidified his status as the right-wing favorite in November’s presidential election by largely winning the Iowa caucus, Donald Trump on Thursday pushed for “blanket immunity” for the president of the United States as an appeals court in Washington considers him to seek immunity from criminal charges accusing him of attempting to illegally overturn the 2020 election results.

“The President of the United States shall have complete immunity, without which he or she cannot properly discharge his or her functions,” and this “even with respect to facts which cross the red line “,” the former Republican president said in an all-caps message on his Truth Social platform.

Prosecuted in four criminal cases, the big favorite in the Republican primaries for the November presidential election is trying to delay his trials as late as possible, and in any case after the election, with his numerous calls.

In December, the judge presiding over his trial on charges of trying to illegally overturn the 2020 presidential election rejected his request for immunity, finding that no text protected the former president from prosecution.

Donald Trump appealed, and his lawyer John Sauer told the justices in early January that “allowing the president to be held accountable for his official actions would open a Pandora’s box from which this country may never recover.”

Washington Court of Appeals Is Skeptical

When asked by one of the judges, Florence Peng, whether sending special forces to assassinate a political opponent or selling a presidential pardon would fall under these official acts, John Sauer answered in the affirmative.

Three Washington Court of Appeals judges expressed skepticism about the immunity request. If a ruling is made against him, Donald Trump could appeal to the Supreme Court, which in December refused to urgently rule on his immunity.

“God bless the Supreme Court,” the former president said in a Thursday post on Truth Social, saying he hoped for an “easy resolution” on the issue of presidential immunity. The billionaire also compared the presidential office to a police officer’s office.

“You can’t stop the police from doing their job of decisively and effectively preventing crime because you want to avoid sometimes rogue cop or black sheep. Sometimes you gotta be happy great but a little flawed. »
