Ecuador records 3,387 detainees in fifteen days of state of emergency, 237 for terrorism

The security forces of Ecuador 3,387 people were arrested, 237 of them on charges of terrorism, in the last fifteen days of application of the state of emergency declared by the Government to try to stop the wave of violence unleashed by criminal gangs in prisons and on the streets.

According to the latest report released this Wednesday by the Government, between January 9th and 24th, a total of 40,158 anti-crime operations were carried out across the country.

He specified that 88 operations were directed against criminal groups now classified by the Executive as terrorists and that five people were killed, whom he identified as “terrorists”.

Likewise, he indicated that 34 inmates were recaptured out of almost 90 who escaped from prisons where prisoner riots occurred.

In addition, 35.7 tons of drugs and 76,386 dollars were recovered, 571 vehicles and 493 motorcycles were recovered, and there were 13 attacks on police infrastructure and as many attacks on public and private buildings.

According to experts, classifying these groups as belligerents opens a legal door for the Armed Forces, together with the Police, to act with all their resources to neutralize them.

The spiral of violence was triggered shortly after President Noboa announced his decision to launch the so-calledPhoenix Plan‘, with the aim of regaining control of prisons, many of them internally dominated by groups of criminals, whose rivalries have left more than 450 inmates murdered since 2020 in a series of prison massacres.

This violence also moved to the streets until it became Ecuador one of the most violent countries in the world, with 45 intentional homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023.
