Italy: activists against animals in circuses stain fountain in Piazza del Popolo, in Rome

Two people protested today against the use of animals in circuses in the famous Piazza del Popolo, in the center of Pomegranatewhere they unfurled a flag and threw red and yellow paint into the Fountain of Lions.

After painting several points of the square’s central fountain, known for its 23-meter Egyptian obelisk, the activists sat on the steps and unfurled a banner that read: “No more animals in circuses.”

The Carabineros (militarized police) They took the two activists, who will be charged with damage to artistic heritage, according to local media.

Italy recently passed a law prohibiting perpetrators of acts of vandalism against works of art, monuments or cultural heritage assets. They will be punished with fines of up to 60 thousand euros, in addition to criminal sanctions.

The standard was promoted by the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, to combat, in particular, protests by climate activists, but it also applies to any type of vandalism.

The funds obtained from the fines to put an end to these acts will be handed over to the Italian Ministry of Culture to be used for the “restoration of heritage”.
