Russia extends detention of Russian-American journalist

A Russian court on Thursday extended the detention of Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva until April 5, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), the media outlet she works for, announced.

A Kazan court “extended the arrest of Radio Liberty journalist Alsou Kurmasheva until April 5” after a closed-door hearing, RFE/RL said on Telegram.

The court confirmed the information in a statement.

Kurmasheva She is accused of failing to register as a “foreign agent” and is one of two American journalists detained in Russia last year, together with Evan Gershkovichfrom the Wall Street Journal.

The status of “foreign agent”, reminiscent of the Soviet adjective “enemy of the people”, imposes administrative restrictions and strict financial control on individuals or entities.

Kurmasheva works for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), a media outlet based in Prague and funded by the US Congress, and was arrested in October 2023 in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.
