Coronation of Charles III: “It was terrible”… Alastair Burford painted the first portrait of the king

When Buckingham approached him, Alastair Burford did not think that he would have so little time to immortalize his model. The 33-year-old artist with red hair and a baby face was invited to a reception at the palace earlier this year. The Illustrated London News (the world’s first illustrated magazine) commissioned a portrait of Charles III from him for its coronation edition and received the sovereign’s permission for him to travel to the very heart of the monarchy.

Hundreds of guests crowd around the new monarch in a gallery decorated with ancient portraits of the royal family. “It was terrible. I was told that I was only allowed to photograph the king with my mobile phone. So I took at least 600! It was almost embarrassing, I thought I was going to get fired. »
