Charles III is doing “very well considering the circumstances,” says his wife Camilla.

Camilla, wife of Charles III, said on Thursday that the cancer-stricken king was doing “extremely well given the circumstances” during a trip to southern England.

The king is “doing very well considering the circumstances,” the queen said during an official trip to Salisbury Cathedral, when a man told her he hoped her husband was doing well.

“He has been very touched by all the letters and messages that the public have sent him from all over. It’s very encouraging,” Camilla added. During that trip, the queen left Charles at her country residence Sandringham in eastern England, where the couple moved on Tuesday. Less than 18 months after ascending the throne, the 75-year-old sovereign on Monday began treatment for an unspecified form of cancer.

If he continues to perform some of his administrative duties, he will be absent from public life indefinitely. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak assured that the disease had been detected “at an early stage”.

The king’s weekly audience with the prime minister took place “by telephone”, Downing Street said on Wednesday, in a rare clarification of the traditional and “entirely private” meeting between the sovereign and the head of his government. According to British media, they are expected to resume meeting in person within two weeks.
