Teachers’ union calls for strike at the first start of classes under the Milei Government

The Confederation of Education Workers of Republic Argentina (CTERA) is carrying out a 24-hour strike in the education sector this Monday, due to salary improvements, which jeopardizes the start of the academic year in several provinces of the country.

CTERA decided to go on strike on the first day of school, with demonstrations across the country and a rally in front of the Ministry of Education in the country’s capital, the day before meeting with the national authorities for “demand” the transfer of funds for educational purposes to all provinces and the opening of a national salary negotiation table.

This is one of many teaching unions, but one of the most combative, which makes it difficult for classes to start in the city of Buenos Aires and in the provinces of Buenos Aires. Corrientes, San Luis, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Entre Ríos, Formosa and Mendoza.

The strike by CTERA and its affiliated unions takes place one day before the meeting with national authorities to demand the transfer of the National Teacher Incentive Fund (phonid) and the formation of a national joint council.

The secretary general of CTERASonia Alesso, anticipated this Monday that if in this Tuesday’s meeting they do not find “results”, they will continue with the “fight plan“, as he told radio 10.

The Executive of Milei cut the phonid -a mass of resources that the Nation transfers to the provinces to improve teachers’ salaries-, which it is not willing to extend after expiring in January 2024, because the responsibility for the educational service lies with the provinces.

It is estimated that around 15% of teachers’ salaries and teachers were paid from these funds.

The provinces demand that the nation, including in court, transfer funds from the phonid.

The cut of funds from the national executive to the provinces also includes the subsidies for public transport and 98% discretionary transfers to the provinces, as part of its aim to achieve fiscal balance this year.

Provincial governors consider that the Executive took “retaliation”in response to the rejection of several deputies linked to the governors of the so-called ‘general law‘, the star project of the Government of Mileiwhich included deregulations in several sectors.

Meanwhile, strikes and mobilizations by various unions and sectors have been a constant since he took office. Mileion December 10th.

Last week the Health sector and train drivers stopped, also in search of salary improvements, after on January 24th, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the country’s main trade union center and which calls itself Peronist, called a general strike.
