160 tons of cereals from Ukraine were destroyed: this is the result of the protest held by Polish farmers this Sunday, February 25, Kyiv reports. Eight wagons of corn from the warring country were opened and their contents thrown onto the railway tracks. The incident took place in Kotomerz, almost 300 km northwest of Warsaw.
Polish farmers have been protesting against the import of Ukrainian agricultural goods for several weeks. To economically support the country at war, the European Union abolished customs duties on its imports. The measure is accused of causing European farmers low prices and unfair competition. In protest, Polish farmers are blocking roads and border crossings with Ukraine. “We must close the railway and road border (with Ukraine) to the import of all these cereals in order to limit the consequences of the current crisis. We need to be able to sell our products, not products from abroad,” explains Adam Grzecnik, a Polish farmer.
Ukraine said the blockade had caused severe economic damage and hampered its military efforts, and called on Poland to punish those responsible. The meeting of the two countries is scheduled for February 28.
