Biden says ceasefire between Israel and Hamas “probably” won’t happen until Monday

The President of the United States, Joe Bidenstated this Thursday that a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas in Gaza, it “probably” will not be achieved until Monday.

He added that Washington is verifying “contradictory versions” of a shooting at a location in Gaza where aid was being distributed.

We are checking this now. “There are two contradictory versions of what happened, I still don’t have an answer,” he told reporters before traveling to the border with Mexico.

More than a hundred Palestinians died in Gaza during a humanitarian aid distribution. The Palestinian Islamic group Hamas accused Israeli soldiers of opening fire on a hungry crowd.

Israeli sources confirmed that the soldiers, who felt “threatened”, opened fire, but denied that these shots were responsible for this number of deaths.

Asked if he was concerned about the possibility of complicating ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, Biden responded: “I know it will be like this.”

Negotiations for a new truce are intensifying, two weeks before the start of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month.

Biden had said earlier this week in New York that he was “hopeful” that a “ceasefire for next Monday.”
