VIDEO. China Sea: Four injured as fresh tensions between Philippine boats and Chinese troops

This is the latest in a series of incidents that frequently occur between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea, a critical crossroads for global trade. The Philippine Coast Guard accused Chinese forces of colliding with two of its boats and injuring four of its personnel with water cannons during a resupply mission on Tuesday. The skirmishes occurred in the Second Thomas Shoal sector of the Spratly Islands, which is claimed by both countries and is the site of regular incidents. The Philippines maintains troops there permanently aboard the intentionally beached BRP Sierra Madre.

Islands claimed by several countries

Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, including waters and islands off the coasts of several neighboring countries, despite an international court ruling in 2016. The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam also claim several reefs and islets in this sea, some of which may contain rich oil reserves.
