The law will coverto all people linked to the independence process“and it will be”fully in accordance with the Constitution, European law and case law”, said the text, which, however, did not give details of the agreed text.

Sánchez promised to support this measure in exchange for the essential vote of the deputies of Together for Catalonia (Junts per Catalunya), the party of the separatist leader Carles Puigdemontit’s from Republican Left of Cataloniafor his reinstatement in November as head of government for a new four-year term.

The future amnesty law should benefit separatists prosecuted for their participation in the failed secession of the Catalonia in 2017.

The main opposition formation, the People’s Party (PP, right), who claims that the law is unconstitutional, criticized the pact with the independenceists.

Spain asks for forgiveness from the independence movement by order of Pedro Sanches. We do not accept this humiliation“, party sources said in a message to journalists.

Sánchez, visiting Brasiliastated in a press conference that the law that will come out of Congress will be “constitutional and aligned with European law”.

The agreement was reached hours before the Justice Committee of Congress must give its approval to the text of the law and send it to the plenary for subsequent voting.

A first bill presented by the socialists was rejected by the deputies on January 30 due to the vote against, paradoxically, of the seven deputies of the Togetherwho considered that the text did not go far enough and could end up leaving out some people like Puigdemont himself.

In fact, the Supreme Court last week announced an investigation for alleged terrorism against Puigdemont – who settled in Belgium to escape Spanish justice -, a crime that was not foreseen in the initial text of the amnesty law.

The parties indicated that it will be on the Thursday before the meeting of the Congressional Justice Committee that the new text of the project will be released, and its scope will then be known.
